Botulinum Toxin (Type A) is the most widely used treatment in the UK and Ireland for smoothing wrinkles and facial lines, mainly on the forehead, between the eyes (frown lines) at the top of the nose and around the eyes (crow’s feet.) It is non permanent. It has safely been used within medical practice for over thirty years with no long- term side effects.
Botulinum Toxin (Type A) is administered by giving a series of tiny injections which take a matters of minutes to do and is usually painless. Afterwards you are able to return to normal activities and work straight away with no initial signs that you have had any form of treatment.
Improvement usually starts after around 2-4 days, with the greatest improvement achieved by 2-3 weeks. The effect will usually last 3-5 months.Subsequent injections tend to work better and last longer. The relaxation of the muscles responsible for the overlying wrinkles result in a more relaxed, fresher expression.
Q: How does Botulinum Toxin work?
A: Botulinum Toxin (Type A)is injected using tiny needles into the muscles of the face that are responsible for the line or wrinkle. It prevents the release of a chemical which is responsible for causing the muscle to contract. This will cause the muscle to relax thereby allowing the line or wrinkle to diminish or disappear so causing a natural, relaxed look. It can also help prevent new wrinkles from forming.
Q: Is it safe?
A: Yes- Botulinum Toxin (Type A)has been safely used within medical practice for over thirty years with no long- term side effects. It has been used for a multitude of muscle- relaxant treatments.
Q: What are the side effects?
A: Side effects are rare and temporary. The most common side effects are minor bruising and swelling at the injection sites. Other rare side effects include headaches and temporary drooping of the eyelids.
Q: How long will it last?
A: It generally takes 3-10 days to work, with full effect after approximately 2 weeks. You can expect it to last 3-4 months with your first treatment, when it will then gradually wear off. With regular treatments it may be possible to increase the longevity of the effect.
